26 May 2017 – Koichi Yamamoto, Japan’s environment minister, has a message for his country’s corporate titans – get ready because putting a price on carbon is all but inevitable if global warming is to be held at bay. The ambitious minister is facing tough opposition from Japanese businesses and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry who argue that the measure would impose “additional burdens” and would make Japanese companies less competitive internationally. While acknowledging that Japan is not yet at a stage where the introduction of a carbon pricing mechanism is imminent, he wants to initiate a more robust debate in Japan on the topic.
